DAYTON, OH (1/18/04) - The Hawks led for all 40 minutes of Sunday's Atlantic 10 contest in Dayton, but it took strong free-throw shooting and a defensive effort that forced five turnovers in the final minute to hold off the feisty Flyers, 68-59. After holding a 41-26 advantage at halftime, Saint Joseph's was held to just five second half field goals and saw a double-digit lead disappear. But for the third straight game, SJU was able to hold off its opponent in the final minutes to improve to 10-4 overall (5-0 Atlantic 10) and post its fifth consecutive win.
Senior Stephanie Graff paced the Crimson and Gray with 19 points, including an 11-for-11 performance from the charity stripe. The perfection from the line tied a school record for best free throw shooting in a single game. Classmate Irina Krasnoshiok poured in 17 points, 15 during a first-half in which she shot a perfect 7-for-7. The Moldova native needs just six points to become the 16th SJU player to reach 1,000 points.
After a Graff back-door pass led to a senior Erin Brady layup, the Hawks held a 56-36 lead at the 13:35 mark of the second half. Dayton then went on a 20-2 run, holding SJU to just one field goal over nine minutes to draw within 58-56 with 4:37 to go. The two teams traded baskets over the next 90 seconds putting the scoreboard at 60-58 with just 2:35 remaining.
From that point on, St. Joe's implemented full-court pressure that frazzled the young Flyer backcourt. Dayton (3-14, 1-5) turned the ball over five straight times in the final minute and SJU connected on 6-for-8 from the free throw line to hold off the hosts.
While Dayton controlled nine minutes in the second half, it was St. Joe's that dominated the first 30. The inside combination of Graff and Krasnoshiok totaled 27 points with a variety of moves from the low-post. Brady, who played a strong floor game, dished all seven of her assists in the first stanza, and finished with six rebounds and five steals.
Stephanie Miller led Dayton with 26 points and six assists. The Hawks, who are tied for first in the Atlantic 10 East with Temple, return home two games against city opponents next weekend. SJU hosts La Salle on Friday in an A-10 and Big 5 matchup and comes back to welcome the Owls on Sunday.
