SJU CONTROLS OVERTIME TO ADVANCE TO WNIT ELITE EIGHT

PHILADELPHIA (3/21/04) - It was a rollercoaster final 10 minutes but in the end, Saint Joseph's and its senior class lived to play another day. The Hawks outscored Seton Hall 11-4 in the overtime period to earn a hard fought 68-61 win in the second round of the WNIT. A close game the entire way, both teams matched 7-0 runs in the closing minutes, with Seton Hall using theirs to erase a 57-50 SJU lead with 1:50 to play. Seniors Erin Brady and Amra Mehmedic accounted for all 11 points in the extra frame to send the Crimson and Gray to Iowa State on Thursday for the WNIT quarterfinals. With Brady and senior Stephanie Graff on the bench with four fouls apiece, it was an unlikely pair of sophomores that stepped up to provide St. Joe's with what seemed like a comfortable seven-point cushion. Sophomores Faith Gross and Kelly Springman combined for six of the seven points to give SJU a 57-50 lead with 1:50 to play. Gross was fouled on a drive to the basket and connected on both her foul shots and after an Irina Krasnoshiok foul shot and block, Springman scored on a scooping layup to put the Hawks ahead, 55-50. Gross capped the run with a driving bucket but the visiting Pirates refused to give up. Melissa Langelier, who was fouled while attempting a three-pointer, made all three shots from the charity stripe and Cortney Ellis tied the game with her layup at the 0:35 mark. Unlike the George Mason game earlier this season when the Hawks saw a late game lead disappear and were outplayed in overtime, Saint Joseph's dominated the extra period. Brady started things off with her layup a minute in, but Ellis responded to give SHU its last lead of the game, 61-59, with four-straight points. St. Joe's finished on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a Mehmedic three-ball and a Brady runner to send the hosts into the WNIT Elite Eight for the first time in team history. Krasnoshiok led the team with 15 points, 12 coming in the first half. Graff (nine rebounds) and Mehmedic each added 12, while Brady chipped in with 10 points, six in the overtime period. Ellis paced Seton Hall with 16 points, while Langelier added 14 points and eight assists. Neither team shot eclipsed the 40% mark from the floor, but the Hawks committed only 16 turnovers to Seton Hall's 22. Saint Joseph's also held a 38-22 advantage on points in the paint. The quarterfinal appearance is the furthest the Hawks have advanced in four WNIT and 11 NCAA trips. Thursday's WNIT quarterfinal will be hosted by Iowa State, a 71-57 winner over Miami (Ohio) in last Friday's second round game. Tip-off for the game has not yet been announced.
