SJU WOMEN TRAVEL TO IOWA STATE FOR WNIT ELITE EIGHT

AMES, IA (3/24/04) -- Not only will the men's basketball team be playing in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Thursday night, but the Hawk women's basketball team will hit the hardwood in Ames, Iowa looking to advance to the WNIT Final Four. SJU takes on Iowa State in the quarterfinals with a chance to advance to the Final Four against UNLV or Western Kentucky this weekend. Click here for live stats, game notes, and streaming audio. SAINT JOSEPH'S (22-10) VS. IOWA STATE (17-14) GAME NOTES HEAD COACH: CINDY GRIFFIN Cindy Griffin is in her third season as head coach at Saint Joseph's University. A 1991 SJU grad, Griffin was named the seventh head coach in Hawk history on April 25, 2001. She holds a career record of 113-62 overall, 65-29 at SJU. Griffin previously served as head coach of Loyola (Md.) College for two-and-a-half seasons. The 2003 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Griffin is 4-2 in the WNIT. LAST GAME: SAINT JOSEPH'S 68, SETON HALL 61 It was a rollercoaster final 10 minutes but in the end, Saint Joseph's and its senior class lived to play another day. The Hawks outscored Seton Hall 11-4 in the overtime period to earn a hard fought 68-61 win in the second round of the WNIT. A close game the entire way, both teams matched 7-0 runs in the closing minutes, with Seton Hall using theirs to erase a 57-50 SJU lead with 1:50 to play. Seniors Erin Brady and Amra Mehmedic accounted for all 11 points in the extra frame to send SJU to the WNIT quarterfinals. THE 2004 WNIT: Saint Joseph's is making its third straight apprearance in the WNIT and fourth overall. It is the first time in program history that the Hawks have advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals. SJU lost in the second round in its previous three trips. St. Joe's will travel to Iowa State on Thursday at a time to be announced. SJU is the only school in the Atlantic 10 still alive in both the NCAA or NIT tournaments. (as of March 22) SJU vs. POSSIBLE OPPONENTS IOWA STATE: The Cyclones are 17-14 on the season and have defeated Idaho State (72-59) and Miami (Ohio) (71-57) to reach the WNIT quarterfinals. Anne O'Neill is the only ISU player to average double-figures (12.8). This is the first meeting between the two schools. This season, Iowa State and SJU had one common opponent - Iowa. The Cyclones defeated their instate rival, 101-94, in double-overtime, while the Hawks fell 62-58 at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic. UNLV: Nevada-Las Vegas is 24-7 and defeated Arizona State (60-57) and Rice (50-47) to advance to the WNIT Elite Eight. The Rebels play Western Kentucky in the other half of the bracket, with the winner to face SJU-Iowa State in the Final Four. RanDee Henry averages 18.0 ppg. to pace UNLV, followed by Sheena Moore at 16.3 ppg. The Rebels average 70.5 ppg. while shooting 44.4% from the field. This is the first meeting between the two schools. WESTERN KENTUCKY: The Hilltoppers also boast a dynamic offense, scoring 70.7 ppg. with Tiffany Porter-Talbert leading the team at 16.8 ppg. WKU passed the 100 point mark for the first time in four seasons with a 104-87 win over Memphis in the second round of the WNIT. Western Kentucky need overtime to beat Cincinnati, 80-78 in the first round. WKU is 2-1 over the Hawks, but the two teams haven't met since 1986. Two of the meetings came with the Hilltoppers ranked nationally. Western Kentucky 2, Saint Joseph's 1 MAKING POSTSEASON HISTORY: This is the first time in four WNIT and 11 NCAA trips that Saint Joseph's has won two games and advanced to the third round/quarterfinals. In the 1978 AIAW Eastern Regional, SJU defeated Temple (84-48) and West Chester (90-65) before losing to Montclair State in the regional finals (86-78). FIRST HALF FINISHERS: The Hawks strong play this season can be attributed to its success in the first half of games. The team's ability to stake itself to early advantages has paid dividends, as SJU is 18-1 when taking a lead into the lockerroom at intermission. Last year the Hawks were also 14-1 when leading at halftime. Overall, SJU is 52-4 when leading at the break during Cindy Griffin's tenure as coach. 1,000 POINT QUARTET: Saint Joseph's is only the eighth team in NCAA history to have four 1,000 point scorers on the same team. The Hawks are in pretty good company, with several national champions and All-Americans in the mix. SENIORS KEEP CAREERS ALIVE: Saint Joseph's has been led by its veteran senior class all season, but with their careers on the line, the sex-tet has stepped up even more. In the past four games, SJU seniors has scored all but 36 points, accounting for nearly 85% of the team's offense. For the season, St. Joe's seniors account for 78% of the team's scoring. DUO SET TO BREAK GAMES STARTED RECORDS: Seniors Erin Brady and Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan are set to break the games played and games started records with Thursday's game at Iowa State. Both have started all 32 games this season, breaking the record shared by seven players in the 1986-87, 1987-88 and 2001-02 seasons. With SJU set to play its program best 33rd game of the season, all the members of the regular rotation will break the games played record of 32. ATLANTIC 10 POSTSEASON AWARDS: Graff, Brady, Krasnoshiok earn spots on all-conference team Seniors Stephanie Graff (second team), Erin Brady (third team), and Irina Krasnoshiok (third team) have been selected to the All-Atlantic 10 team selected by the league's coaches. Graff earns the recognition for the first time in her career and has averaged 12.7 ppg. this season. She leads the team in rebounding, blocks and field goal percentage and has posted five double-doubles this season. Graff was also named to the All-Defensive team. Krasnoshiok was named to the third team for the second consecutive season after leading the team in scoring (12.8 ppg.) The 6-5 center is second on the team in rebounding and has shot .483 from the field. The Chisinau, Moldova native is 11th all-time in scoring (1,228) and is in the top 10 in three-point and free-throw shooting. Brady is a first-time honoree on the all-conference team and averaged 10.7 ppg. and 3.4 apg. this season. The co-captain scored her 1,000th point on February 26 at Rhode Island. ATLANTIC 10 ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE: Graff named to academic team for second straight year Senior Stephanie Graff has been named to the academic all-conference team for the second consecutive year. Also a CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team pick, Graff sports a 3.72 GPA in the field of elementary education. The 6-2 forward marks the fifth straight year that a SJU player has been named to the team.
