UMASS COMPLETES SERIES SWEEP OF HAWKS

NORRISTOWN, PA (4/18/04) - An 18 hit attack by Massachusetts (13-10, 5-4 A-10) helped the Minutemen to a 17-6 victory over Saint Joseph's (7-32, 2-10 A-10) and a three-game series sweep at Latshaw-McCarthy Field. Senior Jason Tarewicz and junior Nick Baldasari each had a couple of hits for the Hawks. The game was scoreless through two innings, but UMass erupted scoring four runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings to coat to the win. SJU scratched across single tallies in the fourth, fifth and seventh before tallying three times in the eighth. Keith Doherty (1-0) tossed five solid inning allowing two runs on four hits to pick up his first win of the year for UMass. Al Braun (1-4) also went five innings surrendering 11 runs (7 earned) on 10 hits. Jeremy Demers pitched two innings and Mike Crane and Scott Ratliff pitched one inning each for UM. Jason Volker tossed two with freshman Joel Grimshaw and Bob Unkel hurling the final two scoreless for the Crimson and Gray. Tarewicz was 2-5 and scored a run, Baldasari was 2-3 with a pair of doubles and scored a pair of runs. Mike Davis and Dustin Onulak each drove in a pair. UMass' Jason Twomley was 3-5 with four runs and two RBI, Mike Athas was 3-5 with three runs, Frank Curreri went 2-5 with a home run, three runs and five RBI. SJU returns to action on Tuesday at Latshaw-McCarthy Field hosting Pennsylvania at 3:00 PM.
