HAWKS EDGE GW, 15-14

PHILADELPHIA (4/05/02) - Junior Shannon Hungate scored the game-winning goal to lead Saint Joseph's, in a 15-14 win over George Washington on Finnesey Field. Hungate tallied four goals and four assists to lead the Hawks, now 2-5, 1-1, in the Atlantic 10 conference win. Sophomore Kristin Teklinsky aided in the victory with three goals, while juniors Kelly Butler, Lauren Foley and Brett Dymarcyzk each chipped in a pair of goals en route to the 15-14 win. George Washington jumped out to an early start scoring three unanswered goal in the first four minutes of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Colonial, Jenny Heisler scored two of the first three to edge the Hawks. Hungate responded on a free position shot. GW continued to maintain the lead but the Hawks would not fold as Foley, Teklinsky and Dymarczyk all blasted consecutive goals into the back of the Colonial net seconds before half-time to even the score at 8. George Washington netted the first goal at the five minute mark to open up the second half with a one goal lead. The Hawks responded with two goals to take a 10-8 lead, their first of the afternoon. Possession went back and forth as each team scored goals to keep the Hawk lead at two. The Colonials then went on a scoring spree, notching four consecutive goals to regain the lead 14-12. SJU, with the defensive skills of junior Kathleen Burke and senior Anne Blank were able to contain the Blue and Yellow as Butler and Teklinsky scored goals to even up the contest. With 30 seconds remaining, Hungate remained calm and collected as she found an opening among the blue jerseys to tally the game-winning goal pushing the Hawks lead by one and ending the match-up with a final score 15-14. Saint Joseph's outshot the Colonials, 32-23 but George Washington keeper Casey Atkins made 10 saves while freshman newcomer Kimberly Williams made 2 saves in the cage for the Hawks. SJU, now 1-5, 0-1, will head to American on Sunday. The game is set for 1:00 p.m.
