DREXEL COMES BACK TO SPOIL HAWKS HOME OPENER

PHILADELPHIA (03/07/03) - Drexel's Lauren Kernaghan scored the game-winning goal with 2:33 remaining in the game to spoil the Hawks' home opener, 9-8, on a frozen Finnesey Field turf on Friday. Saint Joseph's opened up a 5-0 lead within the first 18 minutes, but the Dragons outscored the hosts 9-4 from that point on. Senior Brett Dymarczyk found her classmate Kelly Butler just 33 seconds into the game to start the scoring. Junior Kristen Teklinsky followed at the 16:42 mark, kicking off a spurt of four Hawk goals in as many minutes. Dymarczyk assisted on sophomore Shannon Scott's goal, then scored one of her own just two minutes later. Teklinsky finished off the run with a goal at the 12:36 mark. The Dragons would then score six of the next seven goals to tie the score, but another Teklinsky goal gave SJU the lead at the 14:30 mark of the second half. DU tied it at seven on a Jaime Connahan goal with 7:42 to go and SJU sophomore transfer Bridget Carney scored what looked to be the game winner off a Butler assist with 5:34 to go. Down 8-7, Drexel would get goals from Chrissy Sheehan and Kernaghan to even its record at 1-1. Teklinsky led the Crimson and Gray with three goals and an assist, while Butler (two goals) and Dymarczyk (two assists) each had three points. Kernaghan had two goals and two assists to lead Drexel. The Dragons Shirley Sarker made nine stops in the cage, while Courtney Huff made seven saves for the Hawks. SJU did hold an advantage in shots, 25-21, but fall to 0-1 overall. St. Joe's heads to Florida for spring break and doesn't return to action until March 18 when they travel to Lehigh.
