Marvin O'Connor and
Bill Phillips and sophomore
Jameer Nelson shared the 2001-02 Saint Joseph's University Men's Basketball Hall of Fame award at the program's 47th annual award banquet on Friday night at the Hilton Valley Forge.
O'Connor, a two-time all-District honoree, led SJU in scoring for the third straight year with a 17.5 average. Also honored with the White-Williams Scholar Valedictorian Alumni Award, he was presented with the civic honor by former mayor Ed Rendell.
Phillips, who earned Verizon Second team Academic All-America honors, led SJU in rebounding with a 7.6 average while setting a school record for three-point percentage, hitting 49.5 percent from long range. A second team all-Atlantic 10 Conference player, he also averaged 11.6 points and 2.6 assists per game.
Nelson, a first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference performer, led the league in assists with 188, 2nd all-time at SJU, while placing second on the Hawks in scoring with a 14.4 average. The second team all-District choice also topped the team in steals (40) and free throw percentage (.762).
Mike Moody, who starred alongside current Boston Celtics head coach Jim O'Brien in the SJU backcourt of the early 70s, is the 2002 inductee into the Saint Joseph's University Men's Basketball Hall of Fame. A first team all-Big Five honoree as a senior in 1973-74, the Roman Catholic High graduate (Philadelphia) averaged 11.6 points and 6.1 rebounds, both career highs, that season. For his career, he compiled 791 points, 446 rebounds, 202 assists and 193 steals (8th on the SJU list).

John Bryant, were named the Most Improved Players (Robert O'Neill Memorial Award) while outgoing Executive Vice President Dr. Daniel Curran (William F. Maher Memorial Award for Loyalty) and outgoing assistant Mike Doyle and team chaplain Rev. Bruce Bidinger, S.J. (Pat O'Pake Unsung Hero Award) were also honored.
Former Hawk player John Smith (1978-81), famous for his last second shot that defeated #1 DePaul in the 1981 NCAA Tournament, was named the recipient of the Michael J. Conway Memorial Award. The award is presented to a former player or coach who has given back in the spirit of Mike Conway, a former SJU equipment manager (1965-85).
