BETHLEHEM, PA (12/06/03)--Freshman
Ayahna Cornish scored a career-high 17 points and Saint Joseph's clamped down defensively in a 68-42 non-conference victory over Lehigh at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem on Saturday night. SJU held the Mountain Hawks to just 22% shooting from the floor and senior
Stephanie Graff swatted a program record six shots in the win.
The pesky Mountain Hawks, coming off their first win of the season on Wednesday over Princeton, hung around with Saint Joseph's early on. Despite shooting just 22% in the first half, Lehigh was within one point, 22-21, at the 4:03 mark in the first half. St. Joe's would break away on a 8-3 run to close the half with a 30-24 lead.
Cornish carried the Hawks in the first half, scoring 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. The rest of the team was chilly from the floor, combining for 7-for-23. Lehigh wasn't much better at 7-for-32 as a team, but was aided by a 10-for-17 performance at the charity stripe.
Cindy's Griffin's crew came out of the locker room on a mission. SJU went on a 26-3 run to open the game up and ground the Mountain Hawks. After scoring seven of the half's first eight points on layups by Graff, senior Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan, and a three-ball by classmate Amra Mehmedic, Lehigh was forced to call back-to-back 30-second timeouts to stop the bleeding.
Saint Joseph's continued to dominate the action, racing away with a 22-2 run, giving the Crimson and Gray a 56-29 advantage halfway through the second period. That was as large as the lead would get as the Hawks won their 62nd straight contest when holding their opponents to less than 50 points.
Cornish had a coming out party of sorts, scoring 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She also collected seven boards in 25 minutes, both career highs.
Senior Irina Krasnoshiok scored 13 points and Mehmedic added 12, including the 209th of her career, moving her into a tie for third place all-time at SJU with Kristen Sullivan '96. Graff, who also had 12 rebounds to go along with her six blocks, now holds the SJU record for blocks in a game, season (44 in 2002-03) and career (110).
Lehigh was paced by Dawn Gorynski, who netted 16 in a losing cause.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday in their first Big 5 matchup of the season against Villanova. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at The Pavillion. Catch all the action with Tom McCarthy and
