MEN'S TENNIS DROPS A-10 QUARTERS TO DUQUESNE, 4-1

MONROEVILLE, PA (04/11/03) -- Saint Joseph's dropped its opening match to Duquesne, 4-1, at the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville today. SJU will play the loser of the Dayton/St. Bonaventure match Saturday at 2 p.m. Duquesne (12-10) advances to play the winner of Richmond and Temple. The Hawks (11-6) opened the match by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomores Francisco Velazquez and Van Homer Pangilinan were 8-5 winners at first doubles and freshmen Greg Chang and Antonio Aniello brought home a 8-4 victory at third doubles. Freshmen Jimmy Holland and A.J. Garabedian were leading in their #2 doubles match, 7-6, but the duo did not finish their match. Saint Joseph's dropped all four singles matches which led to the final score of 4-1. However, the score could have been much closer with Velazquez leading his #1 singles match 2-6, 6-3, 4-1 and Chang up 6-7, 6-4, 5-0 in his #5 singles match.
