Temple held on for a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's in a hard-fought Atlantic 10 and Soccer Seven men's soccer match, played in a downpour at Finnesey Field. It was the home opener for SJU.
The Hawks fall to 2-10-1 (0-5 A-10; 1-2 Soccer Seven), while Temple imrpoves to 4-10 (2-3; 3-2).
Temple opened the scoring late in the first half when Will Chevrollier sent a short cross in front to Tony Donatelli, who knocked it in from close range at 33:22.
Saint Joseph's increased the pressure in the second half, but Temple's David Suah scored on a breakaway, chipping the ball over the head of Rob Lavorerio, after taking a pass from Matt Maher at 77:54.
SJU's efforts resulted in a goal at 81:41 by Tommy Johnson. Andrew Tursi sent a cross to Johnson, who headed it in for his first career goal.
The Hawks' attempts to tie the match lasted until the final seconds when a shot by Johnson with five seconds to play was headed over the goal by a Temple defender.
Temple held a narrow 9-8 lead in shots, although the Hawks had a 5-3 edge in the second half. Lavorerio made three saves for SJU while Tony Pratico had one for Temple.
The Hawks host Fordham on Friday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m.
