PHILADELPHIA -
A singles victory by junior Chris Spencer, as well as a win by senior Francisco Velazquez and A.J. Garabedian at first doubles, was not enough as the Saint Joseph's men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to ARichmond at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.
SJU got off to a promising start as Velazquez and Garabedian notched a 9-8 victory to open doubles play, winning 7-3 in the tiebreak. The Spiders, however, bested Spencer and senior Van Homer Pangilinan 8-4 at second doubles and junior Antonio Aniello and freshman Zach Dixon were edged 8-6 at third.
In singles action, the Crimson and Gray could only muster a win from Spencer at the fifth slot, as he won 6-1, 6-3 over Matt Stillwagon. Garabedian hung tough at third but lost 6-4, 6-3 and Pangilinan battled but fell 6-3, 7-5.
In other matches, Velazquez fell as number one (6-1, 6-4), Aniello dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision at number two and Dixon lost 6-2, 6-1 at number six.
