Saint Joseph's reaffirmed itself as a contender for the Atlantic 10 Conference crown with a 5-2 victory over 2004 conference runner-up George Washington at the Arther Ashe Tennis Center in Manayunk.
Senior Francisco Velazquez and junior A.J. Garabedian posted key victories for the Hawks en route to the win. The tandem got SJU off on the right foot by posting a win at #1 doubles. The duo defeated All-A-10 picks Matt Treadgold and Jake Jopling in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-2). Jimmy Holland and Antonio Aniello were edged at #2, 8-5, but Chris Spencer and Van Homer Pangilinan notched an 8-5 victory at third doubles to secure the Hawks the doubles point.
In singles, Velazquez defeated Treadgold again, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 at first singles. Garabedian then downed Jopling, 6-3, 6-4 at #3. SJU wrapped up the win with victories by Spencer at #5 over Daniel Balke (6-2, 6-4) and Pangilinan at at #6 over Jason Sucoll (6-3, 6-3)
