Seese, Stewart Lead SJU Linksters to Successful Season

Aug. 1, 2005

PHILADELPHIA - The 2004-05 season started out well for the Hawk golfers as junior Sean Seese claimed medalist honors in the season-opening Naval Invitational. Seese, who trailed the leaders by one shot after firing a one-over 72 on the first day of play, carded a one-under 70 on the second day to take medalist honors. He became the first Hawk to take top honors at a tournament since teammate Billy Stewart finished first at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Championships.

Stewart didn't disappoint in his first opportunity either, finishing six strokes behind Seese for 14th place. The duo helped the Hawks to a fifth place finish in the 20-team field.

The following week at the Cornell Invitational, Stewart posted one of the sports most impressive feat - a hole-in-one - on the par-three second hole. Stewart would go on to card a score of 74-73-71/218 to finish fourth overall, while Seese placed 17th.

Stewart continued his consistency the following week, placing eighth overall at the Agee Invitational hosted by William and Mary. The Hawks moved up two spots in the final day of competition to earn an eighth place finish in the 17-team competition.

At the James Madison Invitational, Saint Joseph's set a team record for lowest team round, posting a 14-under-par 274 in the final round. The Hawks jumped eight spots from 12th to fourth on the final day of action. Stewart was again stellar for Saint Joseph's placing second overall with an 11-under-par 205. His performance helped him earn Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honors.

Meanwhile, Seese would go on to post his second top-10 finish of the season after a ninth-place showing, and freshman Colin Corrigan flashed signs of good things to come with a tie for 10th.

Momentum carried into the following weekend for Saint Joseph's, as the Hawks claimed the team title at the Big 5 Classic. Playing at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, the beat host Penn by two strokes, 615 to 617, to earn the tournament honor.

Individually, Seese claimed his second medalist honor of the season, and would go on to earn weekly A-10 honor as well.

In the final competition of the fall, it was the rookie Corrigan who shined. The St. Louis, MO native earned the last A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week for 2004, posting a two-round 151 Georgetown Invitational.

Following the opening round of 2005 at the William and Mary Invitational, Corrigan earned his second straight A-10 Rookie of the Week on March 21 as the freshman posted a two-over-par 74 in the opening round of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. Corrigan would go on to finish in a tie for 13th, while Stewart finished in a tie for 10th.

Two weeks later, Corrigan's season peeked as he posted a season-best second place finish in the 90-player field at the Princeton Invitational. Corrigan earned his third A-10 Rookie and first A-10 Performer of the Week honors as the Hawks finished third overall.

In a rain-shortened Atlantic 10 Championship at the Newport National Golf Club in Rhode Island, Stewart posted a 27-hole 108 to finish in a tie for third. Despite being called after a day's worth of competition, Stewart did earn A-10 All-Conference honors with his finish. As a team, the Hawks placed fifth overall with a five-man squad of underclassmen.
