Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell to the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday afternoon by the score of 6-1. Six different players scored for Charlotte, while the Hawks' lone tally came from senior John Creed.

The 49ers (6-3-2, 2-0-0 Atlantic 10) carried the offensive play for most of the first half, failing to convert on multiple opportunities early on until Michael Rose finally found the back of the net in the 33rd minute. Less than a minute later, Saint Joseph's (1-8-1, 0-2-0 A-10) was awarded a free kick deep in the Charlotte defensive end. Creed sent the ball towards the top right corner, where it sailed past the outstretched arms of keeper David Martin and into the net. The goal, Creed's first in nearly two years, tied the game and ended Charlotte's lengthy shutout streak. The 49ers had held their previous opponents scoreless for 337 minutes until Creed's strike.

Charlotte scored twice in the last three minutes of the half to take a 3-1 cushion into the break. Graham Tatters' game-winner came when he lost his defender and drove the ball into the top left corner past Hawks keeper Bryan Benedict from 18 yards out. The 49ers also scored in the 45th minute when, off a corner kick, Benedict punched the ball out to Coleman Hall, whose shot hit the back of the net just before time expired.

The second half was dominated by Charlotte both offensively and defensively as well. The Hawks were unable to penetrate the stout 49er defense well enough to create opportunities for good shots on goal, while Charlotte's attackers successfully carried the play in the offensive end. Goals by Rose (56th minute), Adam Gross (62nd), and Tom Woollard (78th) provided the final margin. Rose also assisted on Gross' goal.

Saint Joseph's next takes on the city rival Temple Owls on Saturday, October 7th. It is the first of four consecutive road games for the Hawks. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
