PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Saint Louis Billikens on Friday night at Finnesey Field. SLU senior John DiRaimondo scored in the 29th minute to give the Billikens the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Benedict was stellar in the defeat for the Hawks, ceding just a lone goal while making six saves.
The first half saw wide open, back-and-forth play. Saint Louis held the Hawks without a shot for the half, while taking eight of their own. In the 29th minute, senior Mo Benne's cross off of a free kick found DiRaimondo in front of the Saint Joseph's net, and DiRaimondo headed the ball past Benedict to tally the game's only goal.
In the second half, the Hawk offense began to find holes in the Billiken defense, allowing forwards Dean Niedosik and Jason Lewis to take a combined four shots in the stanza. Lewis sent a header just wide of the net late in the half, providing the Hawks with their best opportunity at an equalizer.
The Hawks will take the field Sunday afternoon, October 22, at 2:00 p.m. for their final home match of the 2006 season, an Atlantic 10 tilt against Duquesne. Saint Joseph's will celebrate Senior Day, honoring the squad's graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
