Last-Second Shots Lifts VCU Past Hawks, 60-59

RICHMOND, VA - A jumpshot by Virginia Commonwealth University's Krystal Vaughn with 0.8 second remaining lifted the Rams past the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (1-2), 60-59, Sunday afternoon at Alltel Pavilion.

Trailing 58-57 with 20 seconds remaining, the Hawks had an open look to take the lead, but missed their first opportunity, only to grab the offensive rebound. Senior guard Whitney Ffrench got the ball and ball faked a VCU defender, drawing the foul and earning a one-and-one chance. The senior calmly knocked down both free throws with 14.1 seconds left before the Rams pulled it off.

The Hawks scored the opening basket of the first half, but the Rams quickly took control, rolling off 11-straight points to take an 11-2 edge on a Vaughn layup.

Despite the early deficit, Saint Joseph's fought back with its outside shooting. The Hawks knocked down four three pointers during a 17-7 run and took their first lead, 22-20, on a layup by sophomore Jenna Loschiavo at 7:38.

The Rams fought back and led 35-29 with just under 15 seconds remaining, but a three-point play by SJU junior Timisha Gomez cut it to 35-32 as the teams headed into the half.

In the second half, the Hawks opened up with a 14-2 run to take a 46-27 edge. Saint Joseph's senior Ayahna Cornish (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) scored nine points during that stretch to help the Hawks regain the lead.

Unfortunately for SJU, the Rams fought back and regained the lead in the final two minutes and held a lead late into the final minute prior to Ffrench's free throws

For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 21-of-54 (38.9 percent) and 6-of-20 from behind the arc. At the other end, VCU finished 24-of-62 (38.7 percent).

Individually, Loschiavo led the Hawks with 13 points, while Cornish and sophomore Jen Oyler each added 10 points apiece.
