Saint Joseph's (0-2) fell victim to several big innings as Georgia Southern swept a doubleheader from the Hawks at J.I. Clements Stadium. The Eagles won the opener 12-5 and the nightcap 23-1.
In the opener, SJU kept the game tight until GSU broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning. The Eagles loaded the bases during the fifth on a single, a double and hit batter. SJU turned a double play for two outs but a two-run double to right and consecutive errors brought home two additional runs for the Eagles, chasing starter Jason Hessler. Two batters later a two-run double capped the 6-run frame.
Saint Joseph's got RBI singles from Matt Godusky and Greg Mason in the sixth, but the Eagles scored a run in their half of the sixth, seventh and eighth.
Austin Chambliss (1-0) gave up two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief to earn the win. He struck out four. Five Eagles had multi-hit games. GS held a 14-10 edge in hits during the opener.
Hessler (0-1) allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits. He did not
walk a batter and fanned four in 4.2 innings. Greg Mason had three of
the Hawks' 10 hits.
The Eagles chased Brian Anecharico (0-1) in the first inning of game two
without him recording an out, scoring eight runs in all.
Godusky hit the first pitch of the second inning over the fence but
GSU responded with his first home run in two years, a solo shot
making it 9-1.
During the sixth inning, Georgia Southern plated 10 runs.
The series concludes on Saturday with first-pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
