Hawks Prevail in Conference Opener

PhiadelphI, PA - The Saint Joseph's Hawks women's lacrosse team (3-4) opened their Atlantic-10 Conference schedule today with a 13-10 home win against the La Salle Explorers (4-6).

The first half consisted of a close scoring game until the Hawks were able to pull away with an onslaught of goals to lift the Hawks to 7-3 but not before two La Salle goals with under one minute left in the game brought the half time score to 7-5. The Hawks out shot the Explorers 16-10 in the first half.

Throughout the second half, tensions were high as four Explorer goals and two Hawk goals brought the teams tied 9-9. A goal by Jenny Egan with 10:42 left brought the Hawks momentum. They were able to score three more goals and hold La Salle to only one more to ensure the win.

The Hawks were lead in goals by Kerry O'Connell with four, Jessica Westlake with three, and Jenny Egan with two. The Explorers lead scorers were Catie Bornema and Nicole Shubert. SJU goalie Sarah Magan had five crucial saves while La Salle goalie Chantelle McCormick had seven. The Hawks out shot La Salle 28-21.

The Hawks' next game is Tuesday, April 4th at 4pm on Finnesey Field against Long Island.
