PHILADELPHIA -
Bringing the combination of talent and experience with it to Winter Haven, Florida, the Saint Joseph's University golf team will look to capture its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship as the Hawks open the three-day tournament Friday at the Orange County National Golf Course.
Coming off two consecutive fifth-place finishes, Saint Joseph's head coach Bob Lynch will look to seniors Billy Stewart and Sean Seese, juniors Phil Arouca and Ryan McCarty and sophomore Colin Corrigan to compete for the conference title.
Leading the way for SJU will be the two-time A-10 All-Conference honoree Stewart. The team's leading scorer this season, averaging a team-low 74.4 strokes-per-round, Stewart has posted four top-10 finishes this season and won medalist honors at the Cornell Invitational in the fall. The 2003 A-10 Medalist and A-10 Rookie of the Year, Stewart finished tied for third at the weather-shortened 2005 A-10 Championship.
A member of the 2003 A-10 All-Conference Team, Seese enters this year's tournament with a 77.5 strokes-per-round average. Over three A-10 Championships, the co-captain has averaged 76.3 strokes-per round, including a third-place finish in 2003 and tie for 16th in 2004.
Despite competing in his first A-10 Championship as a Hawk, Arouca brings previous A-10 success to Saint Joseph's lineup. Prior to transferring to SJU, Arouca earned 2005 A-10 All-Conference honors after tying for seventh and posted a 12th-place finish at the 2004 A-10 Championship.
Playing in his third A-10 Championship, McCarty heads into the weekend averaging a career-best 77.6 strokes-per-round average. Last season, McCarty finished third on the team at the A-10 Championship tying for 25th overall.
Putting together his best season to date, Corrigan has posted three top-10 finishes in 2005-06 and earned medalist honors at the Naval Academy Fall Invitational. Averaging 76.5 strokes-per-round, Corrigan tied for 51st at last year's A-10 Championship.
Poised to take on the entire Atlantic 10, the Hawks begin play on Friday at 8 a.m.
