Field Hockey Wins Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Saint Joseph's field hockey team opened their season with a shutout win at home Saturday afternoon. Seniors Nicole Antonini (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) and Maureen Casserly (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) teamed up for two goals as the Hawks cruised past Georgetown (0-1) 3-0. Freshman Anna Schreuders (Utrecht, Netherlands) also scored for SJU.

Casserly started off the scoring early with her first goal of the season off a pass from junior Theresa Barbati (Runnemede, NJ/Bishop Eustace) 2:40 into the first half. Antonini widened the lead with her goal assisted by Schreuders halfway through the first half, Schreuders then kept the momentum going and closed out the scoring, exhibiting confidence and skill as she ran the ball in for her first goal as a Hawk.

The second half went scoreless as both teams fought feverishly in back-and-forth action. Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) earned the shutout playing all 70:00 minutes. The Hawks held a 4-2 advantage on corners.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday, September 2 at home against UMBC, game time is set for 1:00pm.
