PHILADELPHIA -
Saint Joseph's senior forward Patrick Duddy made the most of a Temple mistake late in the Hawks' Atlantic 10 men's soccer opener, scoring the lone goal in the Hawks' 1-0 win over Temple Saturday night at Finnesey Field.
In a scrappy game that saw 41 fouls and a pair of yellow cards, both teams were knotted at zero over the first 81 minutes of play. That all changed in the 82nd minute as Temple misplayed a ball deep in their zone. As the Owls' defense gathered the ball, Duddy pressured the Temple defender with possession and stole the pass. With only the goalkeeper in his way, Duddy streaked 18 yards toward the net and beat TU's goalie, Tony Pratico, to put SJU up 1-0 at 81:22.
The Owls pressed the ball deep into Saint Joseph's zone several times over the final eight minutes, but failed to create a legitimate scoring chance.
For the game, both teams posted 11 shots apiece, while Temple held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Pratico made a game-high four saves for the Owls, while Saint Joseph's keeper, Bryan Benedict, made two saves to earn the shutout.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 2-6-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in the A-10. Temple falls to 4-5-1 and 1-1-0 in conference play.
Saint Joseph's returns to action next Friday when the Hawks host Richmond.
