SJU men's soccer got off to a quick start Friday night behind a Patrick Duddy goal in the 11th minute, but couldn't maintain its momentum, dropping a tough 4-1 loss at Dayton Friday night. Two Dayton second half goals led to the first loss for the Hawks in A-10 play.
After conceding five shots to the Flyers to start the game, the Hawks quickly struck back with two Colin Baker near-misses before Duddy scired his fourth goal of the season.
Dayton then came back applying pressure on the Hawk defense eventually equaling the game at 1-1 on a Jeff Popella goal in the 42nd minute. The goal game from a deflected shot from mid-field.
Then three minutes after half Dayton earned a penalty kick that Simeon Zaprianov put away for a 2-1 lead. Dayton didn't back off, continuing the onslaught of shots towards Benedict's net.
Dayton continued to pour it on when Joe Olwig scored his third goal of the year to make it 3-1 in the 65th minute.
Saint Joseph's had trouble generating any offense in the second half as the Hawks didn't attempt their first shot on net until a 66th minute Michael McInaw shot went high.
Dayton ended the scoring in the 90th minute when Florian DeCamps made it the final 4-1 score line.
Dayton outshot the Hawks 11-6 in the first half while Bryan Benedict made three saves in net for SJU. Overall, the Flyers outshot SJU 21-7. Benedict finished with six saves. Dayton also held a 12-4 advantage on corner kicks.
The Hawks dropped to 4-8-1 overall and 3-1-0 in A-10. Dayton upped their record to 8-4-2 overall and 2-3-0 in A-10.
Saint Joseph's travels to Xavier Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. kick off. Xavier won a 3-2 decision against Temple Friday night.
