Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Saint Joseph's field hockey team suffered another tough loss at the start of the 2007 season, falling 1-0 to the Fairfield Stags on Saturday afternoon. Fairfield's Jill Piacquadio scored midway through the first half to provide all the offense the Stags needed on the day. SJU senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer made five saves in the game.

Saint Joseph's (0-2) had its best chance early in the game as the Hawks had two shots off of a penalty corner could not find the back of the cage. At the 16:32 mark of the half, Fairfield (1-3) received a penalty corner of its own. Cunfer stopped the initial shot, but Piacquadio recovered the rebound in front of the goal and scored the game's lone tally.

The Hawks had an opportunity to tie the game late as Jennifer Schultz was awarded a penalty stroke with 12.3 seconds remaining in the game. Schultz aimed left, but Fairfield keeper Liz Thomas sprawled to make the save and preserve the victory for the Stags.

SJU returns to action on Wednesday, September 5 when the Penn Quakers travel to Finnesey Field for a City Six matchup. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
