Saint Joseph's Tops Fordham, 72-47, in Atlantic 10 Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA - Backed by freshman center Sarah Acker's 18 points and 11 rebounds, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 as the Hawks topped Fordham, 72-47, Wednesday evening at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.

Saint Joseph's (10-7) and the Rams started the out slowly, with the game tied at six apiece four minutes into the contest, but the Hawks soon took control of the game. Using a 26-5 run, from 15:07 to 5:57, Saint Joseph's broke open the game as Acker and senior Timisha Gomez combined for 14 points to help the Hawks open a 32-11 edge.

Fordham (0-17, 0-2 A-10) outscored Saint Joseph's 10-5 to end the first half, but Saint Joseph's remained in control, leading 39-26.

Up 43-28, Saint Joseph's offense continued to turn it up, posting a 14-2 run over a five minute span to take its biggest lead of the game, 57-30, on a layup by senior Amy Wold.

Fordham would get no closer than 17 over the remainder of the game.

For the game, the Hawks shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58), while holding the Rams to 33.3 percent (20-of-60). Saint Joseph's, which out rebounded Fordham 41-26, got 15 points from Gomez, 17 points from junior Jenna Loschiavo, with sophomore Ashley Logue capping four Hawks in double figures with 10 points.

Megan Mahoney led Fordham with 23 points.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday at Xavier at 6 p.m.
