LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Saint Joseph's University men's soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak, defeating Rider, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. Jason Lewis and Giacomo DiLisi netted goals in the victory. Head coach Tom Turner earned his 121st win, making him SJU's all-time wins leader.
The Hawks jumped on the Broncs early as Lewis pounced on a loose ball and sent it into the back of the net from 25 yards out for a fifth minute lead. The goal was Lewis's first of the season.
Saint Joseph's (2-2-1) held the flow of play in the first half out shooting Rider (1-7-1), 12-7 and keeping a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
In the second half, the Hawks continued the attack and finally struck for a second goal when Nick Pozzessere sent a through ball to DiLisi who put the ball away for his second goal of the year and seal the victory. It was Pozzessere's first assist in 2008.
Bryan Benedict earned his second shutout of the year, making four saves to preserve the clean sheet. His counterpart, Randall Zapolski stopped 10 SJU shots.
For the game, Saint Joseph's took 24 shots to Rider's 12, while the Hawks were the aggressors in the game committing 26 fouls to the Broncs' 10.
SJU will return home for its final non-conference game of the season when they take on NJIT at 7:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field on Tuesday.
