PHILADELPHIA--Lindsey-Kate McCool's last second goal won a thriller on Finnesey Field for Saint Joseph's, 9-8, over Louisville (3-1). The Hawks (3-2) came back from a two-goal second half deficit to send it in to overtime before McCool won the game in the sudden death overtime period with no time left on the clock.
In the second overtime, SJU held possession for most of the stanza, and a flurry of activity took place in front of the Cardinal cage. With about 5 seconds remaining Jenna Martino had a wide-open look but hit the crossbar. The carom bounced to McCool who slapped at the ball, which hit the ground, struck the crossbar again and fell in the net as the horn sounded.
Leading into overtime, the Cardinals held a 7-5 lead after a four-goal run that spanned two halves, but SJU fought back claiming three of the next four tallies to tie the game at 8-8. Courtney McManama earned the first of those three goals off a pass from McCool with 17:20 remaining in the game. Four minutes later, Kelly Huether scored her fourth goal of the game to tie it at 7 apiece.
Louisville's leading scorer, Bergan Foley, answered Huether's goal with an unassisted tally at 10:54 for the 8-7 lead. The Hawks responded when Martino drew a free-position shot attempt that she converted to knot the game at 8.
In the first overtime period, each team had one possession for each stanza, but neither team could convert. McManama and Abby Renninger had solid chances on net, but couldn't find the goal. In the second stanza, Louisville held possession and Emily Dashiell had the best chance, but she was denied by SJU goalkeeper, Suzy Herlihy.
Herlihy was stellar in net, making 15 saves for the Hawks. U of L's Jen Heup made eight saves in the loss.
In the first half, Louisville stormed out of the gate, grabbing a 3-1 lead. Saint Joseph's didn't give in, scoring four straight, three of those scored by Huether before Louisville's last minute tally to end the half at 5-4.
The Cardinals out-shot SJU 31-24 for the game and held better control of the ball, committing just 15 turnovers to the Hawk's 23. SJU caused 10 turnovers and the Cardinals had 7.
