PHILADELPHIA -
The Saint Joseph's field hockey team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the visiting Bucknell Bison on Tuesday afternoon at Drexel's Buckley Field. The loss snaps SJU's two-game winning streak.
Bucknell (7-3) started the scoring off quickly as Katie Ruiz tallied just over two minutes into the contest. SJU recorded the next three shots, but Bison goalkeeper Jessie Atieh made three close-range saves on sophomore Jen Wrublesky to keep the 1-0 lead.
The Bison earned a penalty corner just before the seven-minute mark, and Amanda Faust converted the opportunity to double the BU margin.
Saint Joseph's (7-3) was able to whether the storm defensively for the rest of the half, keeping the deficit at two until the 42:29 mark, when Ruiz took a long pass and slotted it past goalkeeper Kelly Swanick to set the final score at 3-0.
The Hawks managed to outshoot the Bison 15-14, but the Bucknell goalkeeping was superb. Atieh made four saves in the first half while Sarah Zargarpour made seven after entering at halftime. Swanick made six stops while playing the whole game in the cage for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's will return to action with a pair of games this weekend at Buckley Field. On Saturday the Hawks will face-off with the Saint Francis (Pa.) Red Flash at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's game will feature the Hawks taking on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Game time for that match is set for 3:00 p.m.
