BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team dropped a high-scoring affair, 15-11, to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at Ulrich Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. Lehigh jumped out to an eight-goal lead and never looked back. SJU was led by Jenna Martino with five goals, while newcomer Meghan McDevitt pitched in with three.
Lehigh (1-0) scored the first five goals of the contest in the opening 13:50 stunning the Hawks right out of the gate. Saint Joseph's (0-1) would notch three of the next four tallies to cut the Mountain Hawks lead to 6-3 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first.
Lehigh would go on a 7-2 run that bridged the two halves and lasted just under 14 minutes in all. The lone SJU scores during that time were by Martino.
The Hawks would begin to fight back in the final 20 minutes down 13-5 with back-to-back goals from McDevitt and another pair of tallies from Martino and Peters. The 4-0 Saint Joseph's run lasted 4:16 and drew the Hawks to 13-9.
Two Lehigh goals quelled any thought of a Saint Joseph's comeback as the six-goal deficit with 12 minutes to go was too much to overcome. Martino added two more goals in the final eight minutes to cap the scoring.
In net, Suzy Herlihy made 13 saves for SJU. Her counterpart Kelsey Ferris made 14 saves for the victory.
Saint Joseph's led in most statistical categories such as shots (36-35), ground balls (40-35), draw controls (15-13), and caused turnovers (14-12).
