Three Hawks Earn Atlantic 10 Weekly Tennis Honors

March 16, 2009

PHILADELPHIA - Three Saint Joseph's tennis standouts were recognized for their solid performances during the Hawks' spring break trip to Orlando, Florida as the trio was recognized with Atlantic 10 weekly honors. Junior Jennifer Kedzierski has been named A-10 Player of the Week, while freshmen Laura Matz and Peter Cognetti were both named A-10 Rookie of the Week.

Playing at the No. 1 flight for the SJU women's team, Kedzierski compiled a 7-2 mark while in Florida, with a 4-1 record at No. 1 singles. Kedzierski posted a three-set win over South Dakota to open play, but dropped her next match to Radford. The junior co-captain rallied though and lost just seven points in her final three matches, out-pointing her opponents, 36-7 in wins over Seton Hall, Bryant and South Dakota State. With the wins, Kedzierski improved to 10-9 on the season and vaulted to fifth place in SJU history with 33 career wins.

Posting a 7-2 mark overall, Matz combined with Kedzierski to go 3-1 at No. 1 doubles for the Hawks. In singles play, Matz was just as stellar, going 4-1 at No. 2 singles with wins over South Dakota, Seton Hall, Bryant and South Dakota State. Matz is now 7-11 in singles competition this season and 9-6 with Kedzierski in doubles matches.

On the men's side, Cognetti was a perfect 7-0 in his matches in Florida this week. He was 3-0 at number six singles and combined with teammate Jeff Kessler to go 4-0 at number two doubles. He won two of his singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-0 performance against Monmouth. On the doubles side, the two freshmen joined forces to defeat their opposition by a combined score of 32-11, including an 8-0 drubbing of the duo from Aquinas. Cognetti is now 7-8 this season in singles play and 10-5 in doubles action.

Cognetti and Kessler helped the Hawks win the doubles point in all four matches in Florida as SJU was 3-1, defeating Aquinas College, Monmouth, and South Dakota State while falling to Bryant.
