JERSEY CITY, N.J. -
With several Hawks playing at higher seeds due to a minor injury to one of their top players, the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team earned a gutsy 4-3 match at Saint Peter's on Tuesday evening.
Without junior Jennifer Kedzierski in the lineup for SJU, head coach Ian Crookenden adjusted his lineup appropriately and his team responded.
The Hawks claimed the first point of the match, taking the first and second flights of the doubles competition. Senior Krysta Contino and sophomore Maggie Mullaney posted a 9-7 win at the top doubles flight, while freshmen Laura Matz and Sally Kalani Stainier posted an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Switching to singles play, Mullaney was a hard-luck loser at the top flight. Moving up from No. 2 singles, Mullaney fell 7-5, 6-4 to Saint Peter's Vanessa Pangikas. But the Hawks would rally from there as Matz, Stainier and Contino each earned singles victories, with Contino posting a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles to earn the team win for Saint Joseph's.
The Hawks (5-14) return to action this Thursday when they host West Chester at 2:30 p.m.
