PHILADELPHIA -
Saint Joseph's senior Colin Baker scored two second-half goals to lead the Hawks to a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island on Friday night at Finnesey Field. Freshman Michael Moulton posted his second shutout with nine saves between the pipes.
The two teams played a scoreless first half despite Rhode Island firing 10 shots to the Hawks four. Moulton made three saves in the frame, including a key diving save in the 40th minute on a blast by Rams' Reece Markman.
Moulton opened the second half with two more saves before the Hawks got on the board at the 67:00 mark. Freshman Patrick McGlynn one-touched a cross from the left side of the field to Baker who volleyed the ball into the upper left corner of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0.
After a relentless Baker attacked again with a shot that sailed just over the crossbar, he found the back of the net again in the 78th minute to seal the win for the Hawks. Senior D.J. Salmon played a ball past Rhode Island's goalkeeper, Peyton Warwick, where Baker tapped it into the net to make it 2-0.
The Rams were able to get four more shots off before the final whistle but the Hawks defense was resilient. SJU pulled Rhode Island offsides twice and blocked a shot while Moulton made two saves in the final minutes.
With the nine stops on the night, Moulton has racked up 69 saves in just 10 games for a .775 save percentage.
The Hawks return to action when they host Massachusetts on Sunday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.
