FAIRFIELD, Conn. -
Senior Nicole McCreight tied the game midway through the first half with her team-best ninth goal of the season, but the Saint Joseph's field hockey team was unable to weather a hat trick from Marit Westenberg as Fairfield registered a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at University Field.
Westenberg started the scoring for Fairfield (7-5) when she slapped a rebound past SJU goalkeeper Kelly Swanick 5:35 into the game. McCreight tied the game up 10 minutes later, tipping a pass from junior Ellen Rowe past Stags keeper Maddy Sposito for her ninth tally of the year.
Westenberg posted her second of the game with just under two minutes to go in the first half, scoring on a breakaway to put Fairfield up to stay.
The Stags would add second half goals from Westenberg and Amanda Sullivan to seal the victory. In the cage, Sposito made 10 saves for the Stags.
Saint Joseph's (3-7) begins conference play on Friday with a 3:00 match at Temple.
