Saint Joseph's men's soccer team, unable to come back from an early three-goal deficit in the first 17 minutes of play, fell to Saint Louis, 3-0, at the Robert R. Hermann stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Billikens attacked from the start, scoring off a corner kick just 1:50 into the game. Saint Louis' second goal came nearly three minutes later when Billikens' Jon Roeckle and Jake Brown sent two quick passes in to Chad Vandergriffe who tapped the ball in from the behind Hawks' goalkeeper Michael Moulton.
After shots by Saint Joseph's Shane Kelly and Colin Baker, Billikens' Devon Newport blasted a ball into the left side of the goal from eight yards out to give Saint Louis a three-goal cushion with 28:15 to go in the first half.
In the second half, the Hawks were only able to get two shots off against the tough Saint Louis defense for six total shots to the Billikens 11 on the night. SLU also held a big advantage in corners with eight to SJU's one.
Goalkeeper Yiannys Degermentzidis, who took over in net in the second half, made three saves for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's hosts Richmond on Friday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Finnesey Field.
