Backed by 18 points from senior center Ashley Logue, the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team topped Rhode Island, 56-42. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 14-12 overall, 7-4 in the Atlantic 10 and clinch a spot in next month's Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 19-10 edge, but the Rams used a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to 22-20 on a layup by Andrea Buck with 6:13 left in the opening half.
A strong end to opening period gave Saint Joseph's control going into the second half. The Hawks used a 13-4 streak to end the period as they finished the first half shooting 57.1 percent from the floor (16-of-28).
Despite shooting 26.3 percent in the second half, the Hawks never allowed Rhode Island to threaten. Saint Joseph's allowed the Rams to come within 39-31, but finished strong, outscoring Rhode Island 17-11 to end the game.
As a team, the Hawks got 18 points from Logue, while senior guard Mariame Djouara added 12 points. Junior forward Dominique Bryant added a game-high 10 rebounds as the Hawks outrebounded the Rams, 39-27, with freshman guard Ashley Prim adding a team-high five assists.
At the other end, Megan Shoniker led Rhode Island (9-17, 2-9 A-10) with 14 points as the Rams shot just 33.3 percent (19-of-56) for the game.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Sunday at Richmond. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
