Philadelphia, Pa. - Sophomore Mary Elizabeth Klepper scored the game-tying goal with 48 seconds remaining in regulation play to send the Hawks to overtime as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell short, 9-8, in its rally with La Salle on Thursday afternoon.
After a scoreless 10 minutes in the first half SJU opened scoring in the 11th minute with a goal from sophomore Julie Mineweaser. Explorers' Lauren McDermott answered back six minutes later and scored again at the 3:51 mark after a Hawk goal from freshman Gwen Nihill. The Explorers struck again 44 seconds later to take a 3-2 lead going into the break.
In the second half, the two teams traded goals again while SJU outshot La Salle 13-8 in the frame. Grace Dinn scored a first-position goal two minutes in but the Explorers answered back connecting on two free-position shots to take the biggest lead of the game at 5-3.
Klepper set up sophomore Jen Peters who brought the Hawks back within one at the 20:37 mark and freshman Nora Mcguire scored her first goal of the season at 17:37 to tie it at 5-5. La Salle retaliated two minutes later before the teams traded goal for goal until Klepper tied the game for good with 48 seconds to go.
The Explorers scored in the first minute of overtime while the Hawks were only able to get a single shot off in the three minute frame. In the second overtime period SJU kept La Salle scoreless while getting three shots off but couldn't find the back of the net.
Peters finished with two goals while Klepper, Mcguire, and Alana Glanell each finished with a goal and an assist. Kaitlin LaBarbera finished with six saves in the cage.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, April 9, when they travel to Washington, D.C. for a 4:00 p.m. match against George Washington
