Amherst, Mass. - The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell, 14-13, to Massachusetts in the third overtime period on Friday evening at McGuirk Stadium. Senior Jenna Martino and sophomore Grace Dinn led the Hawks with five points apiece.
Massachusetts' Jackie Lions, who tallied six goals and an assist, scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime after the team's went scoreless in the first two overtime periods.
In the first half Massachusetts jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes. The Hawks retaliated with four straight, including two Dinn goals, to take the lead at 4-3 with 14:07 to go in the frame.
Massachusetts tied it up with a goal at the 6:59 mark before the two teams went scoreless for the next six minutes. Dinn found the back of the net off a pass from Alana Glanell with just 24 seconds left to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead at the break.
The Minutewomen started off the second half with a 5-0 run scoring the first goal just 52 seconds into the second half to give them a four-point lead at 9-5. The Hawks quickly cut the deficit to one with goals from Dinn, Glanell, and Jen Peters to bring it to 9-8 with 15:29 left in the frame.
Massachusetts netted two more before Julie Mineweaser retaliated with a goal 18 seconds later but the Minutewomen answered back to bring their lead back up to three, 12-9, with 9:39 to play.
Senior Jenna Martino then sparked a Hawks 4-0 run, scoring the first goal at the 9:17 mark, and after a Peters goal, she knotted the game at 12-12 with 7:44 remaining.
Peters gave the Hawks the lead two minutes later but with 2:02 to go Massachusetts scored the last goal in regulation play to send the game into overtime.
Dinn finished with four goals and an assist while Martino (2 assists) and Peters (1 assist) each tallied three goals.
SJU goalkeeper Kaitlin LaBarbera made nine saves in net for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's plays at Temple on Sunday in their final game of the 2010 season. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
