Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 match to Cornell on Friday night at Charles F. Berman Field. Senior D.J. Salmon scored the lone goal for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's gave up an early goal in the first half when the Hawks fouled to give Cornell a free kick. With just 1:51 ticked off the clock, Cornell's Jimmy Lannon drilled the ball past SJU's freshman goalkeeper Michael Moulton.
The Big Red fired 18 more shots in the second half while Saint Joseph's was only able to get four shots off in the frame.
Cornell came back from the break attacking, and after a series of shots, Big Red's Chase Aaronson snuck a ball past Moulton in the 59th minute to make it 2-0.
After 20 minutes of action Cornell pushed its lead to 3-0, before Saint Joseph's freshman Ryan McFadden fired a shot on goal where Salmon one-touched the ball into the net to make it 3-1 with 4:25 left to go.
In the remaining minutes the Hawks had two corner kick attempts and shots by Brendan Reilly and Rocco Pozzessere, but Cornell held SJU off for a 3-1 final score.
Overall the Big Red outshot the Hawks 33-10 in the match, while Moulton made seven saves between the pipes. Cornell's keeper Rick Pflasterer had two saves on the night.
Saint Joseph's returns to action when it hosts Iona on Saturday, September 25. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
