The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team posted a hard-fought battle against Dayton, but ultimately fell to the Flyers, 3-0, Friday nigh at Finnesey Field. The Hawks, who posted 14 shots to Dayton's 16, return to the field Sunday when they host Xavier at 1 p.m.
The Hawks (1-11-0, 0-4-0, Atlantic 10) were the aggressors in the opening six minutes, placing a pair of shots on the Dayton net.
Dayton would get on the board in the 13th minute as the Flyers quickly played the ball from the left side of the field to the right. Charging toward the SJU goal, Evan McCreary passed the ball to teammate Ryan Lyn in the middle of the SJU box. He quickly tapped a pass to Victor Duru, who snapped a shot to the upper corner to put Dayton up 1-0 at 12:58.
The two teams played the remainder of the half evenly, with both teams placing three shots on goal.
In the second half, the Flyers (4-11-0, 3-2-0 A-10) struck quickly as Greg Enstone passed up the goal line from the right side to teammate Abe Keller as he charged the middle of the box. Keller would quickly struck the pass into the net to make it 2-0 at 46:35.
Saint Joseph's Tim Brennan had a chance to make it a one-goal game, but his shot glanced off the top of the crossbar and over the net in the 64th minute.
McCreary would add the third goal of the game on a diving header to the far left post off a pass from Keller at 68:17.
For the game, Pat McGlynn led the Hawks with three shots, while Andrew D'Ottavi made four saves in net.
