Members of the Saint Joseph's men's tennis team are taking part in the 2011 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships this weekend at the University of Virginia. Play began on Thursday afternoon and runs until Sunday.
In singles draw qualifying on Thursday, senior Peter Cognetti fell to Dino Dell'Orto of Virginia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Dan Barrus took his match to three sets, but eventually went down to Morgan State's Dmitry Chekhlatty, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
In the first round of the main singles draw, junior Tommy Gates capitulated to Ryan Pool of James Madison, 6-1, 6-3, while senior Jeff Kessler fell victim to JMU's Hugo Ramadier, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, Barrus and Gates teamed up for a 9-7 first round victory over a pair from William and Mary. The two will take on the fifth-seeded duo from Radford on Saturday morning.
