Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - As rains associated with Hurricane Irene made their way into the Philadelphia area, the Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell to Fairfield, 2-0, at Buckley Field. Liz Messaros made five saves in the cage for the Hawks as the teams battled through intermittent downpours to complete the contest before the storm's arrival.

Fairfield (1-0) broke through first as Marit Westenberg scored on a long shot off of a penalty corner just over four minutes into the contest.

Saint Joseph's (0-2) earned a pair of penalty corners a few minutes later, but Therese Doyle had a shot blocked before it made it to the cage.

The Stags doubled their advantage midway through the second half as Sarah Wickles took a feed from Nikki McLucas and sent it through traffic and into the Hawk goal.

The Hawks will be back in action next Saturday, September 3, at Temple for a game with Ohio University. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
