PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore midfielder Jake Nelson has been named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week as he registered the game-winning assist against Bucknell (Sept. 25) and the game-winning goal against Loyola (Sept. 29). Freshman midfielder Tim Lazorko, who also earned the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week nod, has been named Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.
Nelson's assist and goal were both game-winners this week. Against Bucknell, Nelson headed a pass to Lazorko just outside the 16, setting up the freshman for the game-winning score in the 81st minute. Against Loyola, with the score tied at one apiece in the final nine seconds of overtime, Nelson nailed a penalty kick to give the Hawks the win. Nelson leads the team with seven points and three assists and has helped the Hawks double their total wins from last season as the squad stands at 4-5-0 heading into conference play.
Lazorko led Saint Joseph's to a perfect 2-0 week as the freshman standout scored his first collegiate goal off of Nelson's assist on a game-winner in the 81st minute to lift Saint Joseph's over Bucknell on Tuesday. With the win, the Hawks snapped the Bison's five-game winning streak and handed Bucknell its first home loss of the season. Lazorko then registered the game-tying goal against Loyola in the 84th minute, forcing the match into overtime. The Hawks would go on to defeat the Greyhounds, 2-1, on Nelson's penalty kick. Starting and playing eight of nine games for Saint Joseph's, Lazorko has netted two goals and tallied one assist for the Hawks in his debut season.
The Hawks open conference play as they host Duquesne on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
