Men's Soccer Falls to UMass on the Road, 2-0

AMHERST, MASS. - Massachusetts scored two first-half goals to hand Saint Joseph's a 2-0 defeat in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action on Friday afternoon.

Each team had a few shots in the opening minutes of the match, but UMass scored on its fourth shot when Josh Schwartz blasted a shot past SJU goalkeeper Andrew D'Ottavi from 25 yards out. Brett Canepa assisted on the goal scored at 27:47.

The Minutemen notched their second just nine minutes later when Jake Alvaro knocked in a one-timer from close range at 36:31. Will Ellis assisted on the goal.

Tim Lazorko had three shots in the second half for Saint Joseph's, but saw two of them go wide, and one stopped by UMass' Brian Frame.

D'Ottavi made three saves on the afternoon for the Hawks and Michael Moulton played the final 21 minutes in goal, recording one save. Frame made three saves in the shutout for the home team.

UMass improves to 4-5-2 (1-1 A-10) with the win, while the Hawks fall to 4-8 (0-3).

Saint Joseph's remains in New England for the weekend, visiting Rhode Island on Sunday.
