MERION STATION, Pa. - A goal on a penalty corner with 69 seconds left in the game gave La Salle a 1-0 win over the Saint Joseph's field hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field. Junior goalkeeper Kate Mitchell made nine saves in the cage for the Hawks.

Saint Joseph's (4-11 overall, 1-2 Atlantic 10) carried the early run of play, ripping off four of the game's first six shots. La Salle goalkeeper Lisa Shaffer kept out successive attempts by Jordan Martin and Rachael Brosious seven minutes into the frame to keep the game level.

La Salle (7-8 overall, 2-1 Atlantic 10) was able to sustain a period of offensive pressure in the middle part of the half, but Mitchell made a pair of saves on penalty corner attempts to keep the proceedings scoreless.

In the second half, the Hawks were able to test Shaffer early as Martin sent a blast toward the bottom corner that the Explorer keeper was able to kick away. Mitchell then answered, making three of her six second-half stops in rapid succession to keep the game tied.

After a trio of saves by Shaffer in the closing minutes, the Explorers won a corner with 1:16 to go. Olivia Shoemaker received the pass and sent it towards the far post, where Colleen Kempf was able to redirect it into the cage for the decisive goal.

Mitchell finished the contest with nine saves, while Shaffer made seven.

The Hawks will head to 17th-ranked Richmond on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. tilt before returning home on October 21 to take on Massachusetts. The game against the Minutewomen will be Senior Day, when the Hawks will honor their graduating seniors - Jordan Cotter, Leigh Deininger, Meghan Githens, and Abby Hoover - in a pre-game ceremony.
