RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Nicole Gerdes scored her fifth goal of the season early in the second half but it wasn't enough as VCU ultimately earned a 4-1 victory over the Saint Joseph's field hockey team at Cary Street Field on Friday afternoon.

VCU (12-5 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring on its first shot of the game as Arialle Hess scored on a feed from Kelsey Scherrer. Scherrer followed up by converting a penalty corner four minutes later to double the advantage.

Scherrer tallied her second of the day with 27 seconds remaining in the stanza to give the Rams a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Gerdes took over the team lead in points on her fifth goal of the season with 26:19 to play to get Saint Joseph's (4-14 overall, 1-5 Atlantic 10) back in the game, but Scherrer closed out the scoring with 14:47 to go to complete her hat trick.

The Hawks will wrap up the season on Sunday afternoon at Temple. Game time for the crosstown rivalry is set for 1:00 p.m.
