The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fell to Syracuse, 80-39, Tuesday evening at Hagan Arena. The Hawks (2-2) were led by redshirt junior redshirt junior Kelsey Berger team-high 10 points and five rebounds.
In the first half, Syracuse kept Saint Joseph's scoreless through the six minutes of play as the Orange jumped out to a 9-0 lead.
Berger made a jumper and junior Erin Shields followed up with a three to close the gap 9-5, but Syracuse would go on a 36-11 run to put the Orange ahead 45-16 at halftime.
Syracuse held the Hawks to 22.2 percent shooting in the half, while the Orange shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the floor and 50 percent (6-for-12) from behind the arc.
Trailing 52-25 in the second half, Shields made a three to close the Hawks' deficit to 24 points, but the Orange would keep SJU at a distance for the remainder of the half as Syracuse improved to 4-0 on the year.
For the game, the Hawks shot just 21.2 percent from the floor (14-for-66) and 20.0 percent from behind the arc, draining just five of their 25 attempts.
Shields scored nine points and four assists, while senior guard Ashley Prim grabbed a team-best seven rebounds and added four assists and two points.
Syracuse's Kayla Alexander and Carmen Tyson-Thomas combined for 43 points at the other end.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday at Hofstra. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
