UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Led by a 30th-place finish by sophomore Paul Szulewski, the Saint Joseph's men's cross country team finished seventh at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional 10K race on Friday afternoon on the Blue/White Golf Course at State College, Pa. with a total of score of 221. The Hawks competed in a race that saw 170 runners from 25 schools.
Szulewski crossed the finish line in 31:12*, paced by a 5:01 mile, to set a new personal best in the 10K by just over one full minute. Szulewski ran a 10K just one other time in his collegiate career in last season's Mid-Atlantic Regional at the University of Eastern Maryland Shore, where he timed in at 32:13.6.
Senior captain Jon Mazzio and sophomore Logan Mohn crossed the finish line second and third out of all Hawks and 33rd and 36th overall. Clocking in at 31:14, Mazzio missed improving on his personal best in the 10K by just under two seconds but did destroy his time from the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Regionals on the Blue/White Golf Course by 35 seconds.
Coming off of a brilliant performance at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships at which he placed seventh overall, Mohn checked in with a time of 31:24* at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals. Having the experience of just one previous 10K race, Mohn cut 32.9 seconds off of his previous personal best in the 10K.
Szulewski, Mazzio, and Mohn all averaged within one second of one another for individual mile times as Szulewski was paced by a 5:01 mile, Mazzio a 5:02, and Mohn a 5:03.
Juniors Mike Rankin (55th) and Aaron Leskow (67th) rounded out SJU's top five as Rankin clocked in at 31:52* and Leskow crossed the finish line in 32:09*. Rankin's time was good for a new personal best as the junior cut 25 seconds off of his 2010 Mid-Atlantic Regional time on the Blue/White Golf Course. After missing last season's Mid-Atlantic Regional due to injury, Leskow came back strong this season, destroying his time from the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Regionals by 37 seconds.
