The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team had its four-game win streak snapped as the Hawks fell at Temple, 75-65, Wednesday evening in a Philadelphia Big 5 matchup at McGonigle Hall. Senior Michelle Baker scored a team-best 20 points for the Hawks who finished with a 2-2 Big 5 record and fell to 18-9 overall and 8-5 in the Atlantic 10.
A 20-4 run over two halves saw Temple come back from a 29-25 deficit to take a 45-33 lead on a fast break layup by BJ Williams at 16:13.
Saint Joseph's fought back to within 50-41 on a layup by senior Samira van Grinsven at 13:30, but that would be as close as the Hawks would get.
In a back and forth first half, neither team would pull away by more than two possessions. The Owls held a 23-18 point edge with 6:31 to go, but the Hawks answered with an 11-2 run to take a 29-25 advantage on a layup by van Grinsven
The Owls (19-8, 11-2 A-10, 3-1 Big 5) would outscore the Hawks 9-2 to end the half to take a 34-31 lead into halftime.
Saint Joseph's shot 46.6 percent from the floor (27-of-58), 33.3 percent from three-point range (5-of-15) and 66.7 percent from the foul line (6-of-9) for the game. The Hawks turned the ball over just nine times, while forcing eight by the Owls.
Individually, Baker hit 10-of-18 from the field, while classmate Katie Kuester added 16 points. Sophomore Erin Shields was the third Hawk in double figures with 11 points, while senior Kelly Cavallo grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with seven points.
At the other end, Temple hit 32-of-59 from the field (54.2 percent), 3-of-10 from behind the arc, 8-of-15 from the foul line (53.3 percent). Shey Peddy led all scorers with 31 points, while Kristen McCarthy added 19.
Saint Joseph's caps the regular season this Sunday against George Washington at Hagan Arena. Game time starts at 2 p.m. with "Senior Day" festivities taking place prior to the game.
