Alex Veronis Named to Academic All-Area Squad

June 12, 2012

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's junior Alex Veronis was selected to the PhillySIDA/Philadelphia Inquirer Men's Tennis Academic All-Area Team, the organization announced on Monday. Veronis is one of six members of the squad selected in a vote of the sports information offices of the Philadelphia area's 28 colleges and universities.

In the same vote, Kevin Caulfield of Haverford was named the Performer of the Year.

Veronis was a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honoree for the second consecutive time this season and was also tabbed for the league's All-Academic Team.

After studying abroad for the fall semester, Veronis returned to the Hawk lineup in the spring and occupied the first singles position. He garnered nine wins, including three against the top singles players in the Atlantic 10.

Veronis also posted a 14-6 record in doubles play, including marks of 3-2 in the second flight and 11-4 in the third flight. He also won seven of 10 doubles matches against league opposition.

The junior tied for the team lead in combined victories with 23 across singles and doubles play, and his 10 wins against Atlantic 10 opposition was the top mark on the squad.

A member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Veronis was named to the league's All-Academic team for the first time.
