The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team continued play on Saturday in the fourth annual SJU Invitational. A number of Hawks reached the later rounds of their singles flights, while Saint Joseph's has already locked up two semifinal spots in the fourth flight.
In the first singles flight, Tommy Gates defeated Alex Holland of Army, 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 (supertiebreaker), before falling in the quarterfinals to Adam Lawton of Delaware, 6-2, 6-1.
Jeff Kessler and Jose Sierra went down in the quarterfinals of the first consolation flight, as Kessler fell to Villanova's Thomas O'Brien, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-0, and Sierra was defeated by Ari Richman of Hofstra, 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 (STB).
In flight two, all four Hawks in the draw went down in the round of 16. Erik Thunberg was a 6-4, 6-4 victim of Drexel's Alex Fioravante, Dan Barrus went down to Ryan peyton of Villanova, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-8 (STB), and Max Montague lost to Octavio Canibe of Bucknell, 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 (STB).
Pierre Brondeau fell to La Salle's Trevor Donovan, 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 (STB), but advanced into the semifinals of the consolation draw with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ramy Bekheit of Monmouth.
Paranjay Malhotra advanced into the quarterfinals of the third singles flight via a withdrawal, where his match was suspended until Sunday morning. Sean Rojo fell to Delaware's Ryan Kent, 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 16, while Devin Bostick lost in straight sets to Hofstra's Matt Gemmell, 6-2, 6-2.
Bostick awaits Penn's Kyle Roth in the consolation quarterfinals, where he will be joined by Jason Sisti, who swept through La Salle's Dale Fetterman at love, 6-0, 6-0. Kristian Broaddus moved into the consolation semifinals with a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-5 (STB) win over Chris Matturri of Lafayette.
In flight number four, Kevin Gates and Clark Ruiz moved into the semifinals while Andres Urrea had his quarterfinal match suspended until Sunday morning.
Gates defeated Kyle Rosen of Bucknell, 7-6 (1), 6-3, before dispatching Josh Cook of Army in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Ruiz rolled past Pedro Gimenez of Hofstra, 6-3, 6-1, before advancing to the semifinals after Bucknell's Aidan Lynch was forced to retire. Meanwhile, Urrea moved past Drexel's Dan Koehler, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals.
Sam Cadwell began his fourth flight consolation match against Tayler Pultro of Drexel, but play was suspended until Sunday due to darkness.
There was no doubles action on Saturday.
