Saint Joseph's freshman Andres Urrea topped Andrew Berman of Penn, 6-4, 6-3, to win the fourth singles flight at the 2012 SJU Men's Tennis Fall Invitational. Urrea earned four victories in the flight, all in straight sets.
In a match suspended from Saturday afternoon, Urrea began the day by topping Kelly Donaldson of Villanova, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. He then defeated teammate Clark Ruiz, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals before taking down Berman.
Berman reached the final after beating SJU's Kevin Gates, 5-7, 6-1, 10-7.
In the third singles flight main draw, Paranjay Malhotra fell to Delaware's Evan Andrews, 7-5, 6-4.
In the first doubles flight main draw, Alex Veronis and Jose Sierra reached the semifinals with a 9-7 win over Bucknell's Josh Katten and Kelly Morque before falling to the eventual flight champions, Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton of Delaware, 8-5.
Meanwhile, in the second flight, Devin Bostick and Axel Rebstein advanced to the semifinals via a walkover, but fell to Jeganathan Srinivasan and Dan Hansen of Drexel, 8-2.
In the consolation brackets, Pierre Brondeau fell in the second flight semifinals to Morque of Bucknell, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 10-6.
Kristian Broaddus and Jason Sisti will meet in the third flight final after Broaddus topped Eric Pierce of Monmouth, 6-3, 6-1; Sisti defeated Monmouth's Jason Prezant, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals before reaching the final via a walkover. The two will contest the match later this week.
Sam Cadwell advanced to the semifinals of the fourth singles consolation draw with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Drexel's Tayler Pultro, but lost to eventual runner-up Gavin Studner of Lafayette, 7-5, 6-3.
Brondeau and Jeff Kessler reached the semifinals of the first doubles consolation via a withdrawal and a retirement before defeating Rashad Shelton and Ben Davies of Army, 8-3, to reach the final. Urrea and Max Montague won their quarterfinal match over Monmouth's Freddy Marcinkowski and Ramy Bekheit, 8-4, to reach the semifinals, where they dispatched Darius Frick and Alex Fioravante of Drexel, 9-7. The all-SJU final will be played later in the week.
In the second doubles consolation bracket, Dan Barrus and Kevin Gates were 8-5 winners over Kyle Rosen and Jonathan DeFrancesch of Bucknell before defeating SJU teammates Malhotra and Erik Thunberg by the same score in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Ruiz and Sean Rojo cruised to an 8-0 win over La Salle's Dale Fetterman and Thomas MacLeod. They will face Pultro and Dan Koehler of Drexel, who beat Barrus and Gates 9-8 (4) to reach the final; that final will also be contested at a later date.
Selected Hawks will be back in action on Friday at the Penn Invitational.
